چکیده

The logging of GPS data is quickly becoming an important source of data for travel behavior researchers. Post-processing these data requires to match the GPS data stream to the coded map of the transportation network. The output of the map-matching process is the identification of the routes that were actually taken. This paper presents an innovative map-matching algorithm that relies only on the GPS coordinates and on the network topology. Examples are provided on a large data set for the Zurich area. The paper demonstrates the efficiency of the algorithm in term of accuracy and computational speed. Preferred citation: F. Marchal, J. Hackney and K.W. Axhausen (2004). Map-matching of GPS traces on high-resolution navigation networks using the Multiple Hypothesis Technique (MHT)

In recent years, data from GPS-based surveys has become increasingly important since transport modellers benefit from more accurate and reliable information about times, geographic locations, and routes. At the same time, participants’ burden is reduced substantially if the GPS data collection does not involve time-consuming questions to derive additional information. However, without responden...

An effective Time-Aware Map Matching process for low sampling GPS data

In the era of the proliferation of Geo-Spatial Data, induced by the diffusion of GPS devices, the map matching problem still represents an important and valuable challenge. The process of associating a segment of the underlying road network to a GPS point gives us the chance to enrich raw data with the semantic layer provided by the roadmap, with all contextual information associated to it, e.g...

Map-matching in a real-time traffic monitoring

We describe a prototype implementation of a real time traffic monitoring service that uses GPS positioning information received from moving vehicles to calculate average speed and travel time and assign them to road segments. The primary factor for reliability of determined parameters is the correct calculation of a vehicle location on a road segment, which is realized by a map-matching algorit...

On Efficient Map-Matching According to Intersections You Pass By

Map-matching is a hot research topic as it is essential for Moving Object Database and Intelligent Transport Systems. However, existing map-matching techniques cannot satisfy the increasing requirement of applications with massive trajectory data, e.g., traffic flow analysis and route planning. To handle this problem, we propose an efficient map-matching algorithm called Passby. Instead of matc...

An Incremental Map-Matching Algorithm Based on Hidden Markov Model

Map-matching algorithms aim at establishing a vehicle location on a road segment based on positioning data from a variety of sensors: GPS receivers, WiFi or cellular radios. They are integral part of various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including fleet management, vehicle tracking, navigation services, traffic monitoring and congestion detection. Our work was motivated by an idea of...
